THE GEOGCAFE METHOD
How We Teach: Concepts First, Then Exam Technique
Exam boards change the questions every year. They cannot change the concepts the questions come from. Every GeogCafe lesson is built on that idea.
The same method runs in every Secondary, JC, IP and IB class.
The Two Things That Decide a Geography Grade
After more than 20 years of teaching Geography in schools such as Raffles Institution, Hwa Chong and Jurong Junior College, Mr Eric Goh narrows a good Geography grade down to two things. First, a strong knowledge of the theories and concepts in the syllabus. Second, the skill to apply them to questions, built by working through past questions.
Most students who struggle are missing one of the two. Some know the content but write answers that do not match what the question is asking. Others have practised technique on a shaky base of concepts. The lessons at GeogCafe are designed to fix whichever one is missing.
How a Student Moves Through GeogCafe
-
Find where the marks are being lost
Early marked work tells us whether a student is losing marks on content, on reading the question, or on time. A student who scored U at Prelims because their knowledge was 'all over the place' needs a different plan from one who knows the content and cannot finish the paper.
-
Teach content in small, organised pieces
Instead of a stack of lecture notes, students get concise notes organised by key question, with examples chosen for the answers they support. Mr Goh uses stories, videos and demonstrations to make abstract processes, from plate tectonics to atmospheric circulation, easy to picture and recall.
-
Unpack the question before answering it
Students learn to read command words and mark allocations, break a question into the parts the marks reward, and plan essays by question type. The goal is full marks with the fewest words, which is what saves time in the exam hall.
-
Practise in every lesson, and get it marked
Every lesson includes practice. Mr Goh marks the work, goes through it with the class, and points out the specific habit costing each student marks.
-
Keep going between lessons
Students can send questions on WhatsApp or book a Zoom consultation outside class hours, so a doubt the night before a test does not have to wait a week.

Small Classes, Taught by the Founder
Every Geography class is taught personally by Mr Goh. Classes are kept small so each student’s work gets read and discussed
Classrooms are air-conditioned and fitted with a SMART Board and high-speed internet, so each lesson runs for students in the room and online at the same time
In Their Words
“Mr Goh then introduced us to the various question types that can come out for the A level essays and short answer questions, teaching us how to unpack and answer the question fully in a concise and precise manner.”
Timothy, NJC, H2 Geography: A
“Mr Goh provides us with concise notes that are organised according to key questions.”
